Living Food Systems

Amazon Aquaponics: Growing Food Security Through Living Water Systems that respect natural cycles and Indigenous knowledge.

Amazon Aquaponics CLG is an Irish non-profit dedicated to connecting Ireland and Ecuador through ecological innovation. They develop adaptive systems that respond to food insecurity and water pollution, reconnecting communities with the natural world through practical, low-energy, and modular design.

Inspiring Resilient Community Food Sovereignty

What began as a visionary student project has matured into a cross-continental initiative linking researchers, schools, and Indigenous partners. Amazon Aquaponics facilitates a profound exchange between scientific learning and traditional ecological knowledge. Working with the Achuar community of Sharamentsa, they address the intersection of nutrition and environmental health, proving that community-led initiatives can protect the rainforest while ensuring local prosperity. This is a journey of partnership where food and water systems become a single living classroom for future generations.

A Vision Led by Passion and Purpose

The heart of this mission is driven by founder Paddy Shanahan, whose visionary spark ignited this journey, and Bernadette Shanahan, who leads the program's operations with dedicated precision. Together with Achuar leaders and lead farmers, they have built a bridge of mutual respect between Ireland and the Amazon. This leadership ensures the project remains rooted in human connection and ecological integrity. By focusing on youth leadership and practical science, they empower communities to steward their own resources, fostering a regenerative future that honors both people and the planet.

Water is infrastructure

Water flows as the lifeblood connecting fish, plants, and people.

Water is the living infrastructure of the Amazon Aquaponics model. By deploying floating structures over existing ponds, the system creates a circular process where water is never wasted. Fish waste provides the nutrients, while plant roots act as biological filters, cleaning the water before it returns to the pond. This design uses biodegradable materials like natural vines and woven baskets, ensuring the entire cycle is gentle on the ecosystem. It is a practical, elegant solution that transforms potential pollutants into a source of nourishment and ecological resilience.

The Sharamentsa Partnership and Shared Future

In the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Sharamentsa project stands as a model of sovereignty. By combining regenerative design with local materials, Amazon Aquaponics avoids the need for land clearing, protecting biodiversity while increasing food variety. This collaboration between the Achuar and the Irish non-profit shows the power of shared knowledge.

Amazon Aquaponics is showing how food, water, learning, and community can come together in one living system. Support the Mission.
